Crisis Team Expert to Speak at School Psychology Institute April 27

Scott Poland, who led crisis teams responding to the federal courthouse bombing in Oklahoma City and the school shootings in Paducah, Ky., Jonesboro, Ark. and Columbine, Colo., will be the guest speaker at the 10th Annual School Psychology Institute at Illinois State University on Friday, April 27.

The Institute will present a skill-based workshop on Managing School Crises: Lessons for Prevention and Intervention for Schools and Communities from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. in room 114 of the Professional Development Building on campus. The workshop is free, but pre-registration is required by contacting Steven Landau, Psychology at selandau@ilstu.edu by Friday, April 20.

Poland is a professor at the Center for Psychological Studies, NOVA Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. In addition to leading the aforementioned crisis teams, he was also a member of the Task Force on School Violence and Victimization for the U.S. Departments of Education and Criminal Justice.

Poland has published extensively on topics pertaining to school-based crisis and suicide interventions, and was a consultant to the U.S. Department of Education on its booklet Early Warning, Timely Response: A Guide to Safe Schools.

The Institute also will sponsor a research colloquium from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. for ISU students and faculty. Poland will discuss Self Injury: Emerging Trends and Critical Issues in the same room in the Professional Development Building.
