Welcome to the first edition of a new faculty/staff monthly e-newsletter, Identity: Valuing Our Diversity. This publication will feature profiles of faculty teaching, research and service, the service and initiatives of our support staff and news of university programs and events that center on race, ethnicity and the LGBTQA community. Also included will be issues pertaining to the concerns of those with special needs and other underrepresented groups.
One of Lou Perez’ favorite expressions is citizen of the world. Rather it means one who travels beyond their comfort zone, whether physically or mentally.
Judi Khalilallah has no problem stating her passion. Her passion is teaching awareness of diversity in any manner possible, whether at work in the Dean of Student’s office, in her collegiate courses or at the Boys and Girls club where she will soon begin volunteering.
What does a five-month strike in 1967 at San Francisco State University have to do with Illinois State University? The strike led to one of the first black studies programs in the U.S. That activist movement paved the way for the establishment of women’s studies in the late 1970s. Now it is the 2000s, and a new wave of activism has resulted in LGBTQA coming to the forefront of Illinois State collegiate life.
