Ali Riaz wants students to open their eyes and minds to the world around them. He encourages them to look beyond their own experiences and beliefs to explore the politics, cultures, religions and worldviews of others. This is essential in an increasingly globalized world, and something he sees as being at the heart of his mission as an educator.
Maggie Im came to Illinois State University in 1992 as a first-generation college student and said she has thrived on this campus ever since. The keys to her success as a student were family encouragement, campus involvement and a great campus mentor. She thinks one of the keys to her job satisfaction and to retention and graduation of current students at the University is Success 101.
Admissions Director Molly Arnold said federal programs specifically designed for low-income, first-generation college students can often appear scary and convoluted to high school students and their families. That’s why her office has developed a multi-step process to help those students enroll at Illinois State University.
When prospective students explore universities, they search for a sense of comfort and security. Underrepresented students in particular may search the curriculum’s offerings to locate a program that educates the whole campus on the dynamics of race and ethnicity. For decades, the Ethnic Studies Program at Illinois State has been meeting the needs of such students.
